8 WEEK WORKSHOP · STARTS SEPTEMBER 27TH
The Gates of Grief
Grief from the personal to the planetary. A guided space, over eight weeks, where grief can be felt, shared, and gently transformed.
The Gates of Grief is a framework developed by psychotherapist, author and grief ritualist Francis Weller, drawn from his book The Wild Edge of Sorrow. Rebecca trained directly under Weller and teaches his foundational gates with his permission — adapting and extending them through her own study and lived practice. Gates III and V draw additional inspiration from the work of Joanna Macy and Perdita Finn respectively, and a sixth gate is Rebecca's own addition, inspired by the work of Sophy Banks and Holly Truhlar.

OUR JOURNEY TOGETHER
8 Weeks online
Over eight weeks, we move through each gate together, exploring how grief shows up from the deeply personal to the planetary. This is a space for ritual, reflection, and community, not performance or quick resolution. Grief, here, is sacred ground.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
Facilitated circles
Each session is guided by Rebecca, an experienced grief practitioner and founder of The Grievery — creating space to share, learn, and listen at your own pace.
Somatic practice
Gentle body-based movement, breathwork, and grounding practices — helping you meet grief not just in the mind, but in the body, where it often lives.
Ritual and reflection
Simple, secular rituals and reflective practices to honor memory, name what has been lost, and hold the complexity of grief with reverence rather than resolution.
Community connection
Genuine connection with others navigating grief, as a community of practice. Witnessed and witnessing, in a space without judgment.
Choice and presence
You decide how much to speak, listen, or rest in silence. Participation is always flexible — you're never asked to perform your grief. Your presence is enough.
TESTIMONIALS
“The Gates of Grief Workshop was an immensely helpful personal experience navigating through my grief. Each week I encountered myself and the work I was longing to do, to release, and to grow within. Each aspect was woven gently and just right for the day's theme.”
—Suzanne
“When I signed up for this course, I knew that I was curious about the content and also in need of the container. The real revelation for me was how profound it has been to have this community. And another surprise—there were moments of real fun, joy, and connection amidst the sorrow.”
—Aimee
“My experience with the gates of grief group was incredible. Together we built a deep and respectful container that was expertly crafted and facilitated by Rebecca. This class gently opened these gates for me to access and do the work. This class has shown that grief work is the work!”
—Anonymous
MEET YOUR FACILITATOR
Rebecca Churt (she/her)
Founder · grief guide · end-of-life doula · ritualist
Rebecca is a practicing end-of-life doula and the founder of The Grievery. Her approach is guided by an understanding that grief doesn't need to be fixed or solved — it asks to be tended to with care, presence, and compassion.
Her work centers on weaving connections across divides and building collective spaces where transformation can take root. As a bridge-builder and community weaver, she collaborates with individuals and organizations to reimagine leadership, healing, and care — recognizing the importance of moving beyond colonial narratives around productivity, resilience, and wellness, and centering the wisdom of interdependence.
Through The Grievery, Rebecca invites others to co-create a space where it's okay to not have all the answers, to not "move on," and instead, to simply be.

This workshop is for anyone ready to explore grief more deeply — whether you're carrying personal loss, the ache of unmet expectations, ancestral sorrow, or grief for the state of the world. If it has a name or doesn't yet, it's welcome here.
If your loss is very recent or feels overwhelming, you may want to consider beginning with one-on-one support instead — a more private space to simply arrive before joining a cohort. Trust what you know about yourself right now.
-
This isn't a certification or practitioner training — it's an immersive eight-week experience for anyone wanting to understand and move with grief more deeply. What you'll leave with:
An expanded understanding of grief beyond personal loss — ancestral, collective, planetary.
Connection and community in a small, sustained cohort of three to five people.
Practical, somatic tools for navigating grief in daily life through a liberatory lens.
Embodied grounding strategies and guidance for holding grief with compassion and presence.
If you're drawn to the Grief Guide Training but want a first step, Gates of Grief is a natural place to begin.
-
A bridge between the personal and collective, the ordinary and the sacred — helping us remember connection and carry what has been lived forward. Ritual doesn't explain grief. It gives it a shape outside your own body, so you are not the only container left holding it.
-
We bring grief into the body, not just the mind. Rather than fixing or containing what you feel, our practices help you stay present with grief as it moves — grounded, resourced, and in choice.
-
The Grievery is a secular community. We hold space for people to grieve outside formal devotional settings. Nothing here requires belief, practice, or any particular relationship to spirituality.
-
That’s okay! We encourage everyone to join the first session to connect with the group, receive a warm welcome, and get grounded in the group agreements and become familiar with the gates. All sessions will be recorded and available for playback if you miss a week. That said, the real magic happens when everyone is present, so we hope you can attend as many sessions as possible!
-
Yes. All sessions will be recorded and made available after each live session to all registered participants.
-
We encourage it, to help everyone feel part of a shared space — but it's always optional.
-
In addition to the 6 gates (one, each week) we start with a Group Foundation & Ritual Opening
Entering the threshold, creating intentions, and practices that will guide our journey together. And end with a Closing Gratitude Ritual as a collective ceremony to honor our time together, integrate insights, and close the circle with care. -
They complement each other without overlapping — both are worth doing, and neither is a prerequisite for the other.
That said, if you're new to The Grievery or want to get a felt sense of our approach before committing to a 12-week training, Gates of Grief is a natural entry point. It's smaller, shorter, and more personal — a chance to experience the work from the inside before deciding whether you want to learn to hold it for others.
If you're ready to train as a grief guide and already feel confident in our approach, there's no need to do the workshop first. The training stands fully on its own.
When in doubt, start with Gates of Grief. You'll know from the inside whether the training is your next step.
-
No — though if you've read Francis Weller's The Wild Edge of Sorrow, you'll find familiar ground here. The Gates of Grief framework draws on Weller's work, and Rebecca trained directly under him to teach it. But this isn't a reading group or a walk-through of the book. It's a live, embodied, relational experience — grief met in community, through somatic practice, ritual, and shared presence. The book can enrich the experience, but you don't need to have read it, and the workshop won't follow it page by page.
